Deaths from otitis media are not usual but there are reasons which can cause death like brain abscess and leptomeningitis

The two most common known bacterias which cause OM are Streptococcus pneumoniae and nontypable Haemophilus influenza.

It is the ear infection which progresses from OM effusion if it is not dealt propely. Diagnosis of AOM is based upon positive physical findings of a full or bulging tympanic membrane (TM), absent or obscured bony landmarks, distorted or absent light reflex, and decreased or absent mobility of the TM.

Otitis media with effusion is basically the intiatial stage of otitis media and if the problem is not dealt with then it can even cause choronic oititis media. It is also called serous or secretory otitis media (SOM)
