Is Bronchitis Contagious
Bronchitis, a Breathing Disease
Bronchitis is the swelling in the passage of the windpipe, which in turn connect to the lungs. Bronchitis starts with the irritation in the bronchial tubes. Then, there is a formation of mucus. The mucus deposit blocks the air passage. This creates problem in breathing.
Type of Bronchitis
There are two types of Bronchitis:
1. Acute Bronchitis
2. Chronic Bronchitis
Acute Bronchitis occurs due to severe cold and stays for a shorter period of time. But Chronic Bronchitis usually is the pain in the chest. This is accompanied by cough and fever. There is a difficulty in breathing too in case of chronic bronchitis.
Effects of Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic Bronchitis lasts for a long time and mucus is released during cough. The patients find it difficult to breathe for a longer time. The level of difficulty may vary from person to person. They may fall sick due to lung infections too. The other names of this disease are ‘chronic obstructive lung disease’ and ‘chronic obstructive air passage disease’. The difficulty lies in respiration in the body of the patient. Let us analyze, is Bronchitis contagious or not?
Is Bronchitis contagious?
It is extremely true. It is contagious disease. The virus can transfer the disease when you sneeze or cough. In the initial stage, there is a swelling in the air passage. At this time, there is no formation of virus. When the bacteria released by the patients through sneeze and cough spreads through the air, the disease gets spread to others around. The infected person should consult a physician immediately and get medicines. Otherwise it leads to pneumonia too. Both the types of Bronchitis are contagious. The viral infection is powerful and it may affect the healthy people around through indirect and direct contacts.
How to Prevent Bronchitis?
By following healthy and hygienic daily routine, we can prevent the disease from spreading. Cleanliness is very important. As virus lies everywhere, wash your hands before meals and after using the toilets. Do not spread the infection in the air by sneezing and coughing. Use a hand towel, if you are having such a problem. Asthmatic patients develop acute Bronchitis. Taking antibiotics is the best solution to get relief from acute Bronchitis. Only such medicines can work well with viral infections. Take the advice of doctor for the consumption of medicines and follow the dosage and duration strictly. Other than taking medicines, take lot of fluids and bed rest is important for the patients. Antibiotics are is helpful in preventing further infections. Asthma patients can consult a doctor and get themselves medicated in such scenarios. They can take the medicines regularly and use the inhaler for fast relief. This will widen the passage of respiratory organs and affected person can feel more comfortable.

What is chronic bronchitis?
Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lungs. This often causes constriction to the air passage in and out of the lungs. The cilia that is present adjoining the air passage secrete mucus and obstruct the passage of air thereby leading to suffocation. When this continues to be present for around a few months timeframe, then it is termed as chronic bronchitis. Smoking has been proven to be the main cause of chronic bronchitus.
What causes bronchitis
Bronchitis is caused by bacteria and viruses. Rhino virus, influenza and adenoviridae are a few that can cause bronchitis. However, chronic bronchitis is often caused due to the habit of smoking. Occupational exposure to pollutants has also been determined to be the cause of brochitis.
How do you get bronchitis?
Bronchitis is caused usually by bacterial or viral infections. However, it is contagious and can also be caused just by being in touch with the infected person. Second hand smoke can even result in accumulation of irritants in the air passage which in turn can result in broncitis

I was given augmenten (antibiotic) for acute sinusitis 8 days ago. The fever went down and I’m coughing a bit less, but I’m wiped out and developed squeeky sounds in my upper chest. Mucus color changed from green to opaque white. Today the doctor said it had gone into athsmatic bronchitis, and gave me a shot of cortisone. Now my heart is pounding and my chest kind of hurts. Has anyone else had this experience? I had pneumonia with staph infection last October, so am worried if the doctor did enough test to avoid it coming back.

Bronchitis is contagious after 2-3 days since you contracted this problem. But antibiotics help in alleviating the problem. Still the health problem is contagious since you will have cough associated with this disease

I have just been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis (no i don’t smoke and never have) and have had it several times a year for 15-20 years. I have NEVER passed it on to anyone, including my hsband in that time. According to my doctor, it’s not contagious at all and, being a teacher, I take that part very seriously.

I get bronchitis quite a few times a year, yes I am a smoker. I always am around people when I have it but none of my friends or family members have gotten it. It’s not like when you have it you are sneezing or coughing in anyones face so I dont think it is a big deal.

I’m glad that none of your family members have gotten it from you. However, it doesn’t matter that you are not coughing or sneezing right in their faces, germs pass through the air. I believe that bronchitis IS contagious. I’ve gotten bronchitis from people before, and trust me, I don’t let anyone cough in my face. As person with a chronic lung disease (Cystic Fibrosis), I see things a bit differently and do think that it’s a big deal.

Well I don’t care what anyone says because according to my girls it IS very contagious. One was just diagnosed a few days ago and now the other is showing the same exact symptoms only worse in severity. I have done everything in my power to keep them apart including setting up a bed in the living room so they are not sleeping in the same room. I have made sure they were not in the same room as each other. Which now seems I was too late on separating them. I myself have to be careful when it comes to any respiratory illnesses because having asthma they easily turn to pneumonia with me.

I got it every year as a child and now I’m 50, it’s still the same and my family I live with do not get it, so I assume I am not contagious after all these years. Also my lungs are not damaged and a pulmonologist tested me for 2 years ,different tests. I do not have COPD.

Just because your family and those you work with you do not catch your bronchitis does not make you non-contagious. I am writting from my Moms hospital room. She currently is hospitalized because someone thought they were not contaious and were. She is a 75 yr old cancer pt. The person who gave it to her had contact with many people and only infected a few but had this person stayed home only his family members would have been exposed.I am sorry to say this to folks that think it is okay to go to work sick but you piss me off! There are 2 kids in this hospital who were infected by this same person both are under age 5.I sat with their Moms tonight after we were told their kids have the same virus as my Mom.We talked and found out the same company had worked on all of our homes, and it was the same crew of guys. All of the crew had been coughing so I had asked if any were sick, they all had said it was smokers cough in the begining of the day… but one of the guys later in the day said one of the others was sick. Less than 48 hours later my Mom was sick. I learned these kids got sick at the same time. The guy who worked on our house was only at our house long enough to rip out a carpet.

Although I agree, people who are sick should stay home, for people like myself who have chronic bronchitis getting it at least once every 2 months due to a weak immune system, asthma and weak lungs from chronic croup as a kid it is hard to call out of work every time you are sick. Your superiors start thinking you are lieing and won’t allow you to call out, so a lot of times it is not the person who is sick that is the culprit it is the big wigs in the world that believe being sick doesnt matter and you need to be at work. I am a manager so most of the time I cannot call out when there is no-one to come in for me, working different shifts and having no back up person because your work will not hire in some-one to cover a position that is open when someone else left is the problem. It’s today’s society and the lack of jobs that cause the problems not the sick people.

I went to the doc for pink eye, and lo and behold found out I also have Viral Bronchitis. Had no clue. I have been tired but chalked that up to stress from work. I have had minor chest pains but chalked that up to Costocondritis, which I tend to get once a year. I am not one of the fortunate ones that are allowed to stay at home when Im sick. In fact when my work found out I had pink eye this past week, they still wanted me to come in!!! Telling them I have viral bronchitis is not going to prevent me from being told I have to work. I agree, that when you are contagious, the best bet is to stay home!!! Running a fever and/or having discolored mucus is a sure sign your infectious. And no matter how often you wash your hands, sneeze in your sleeve or cough down your shirt, something is going to go somewhere and infect a co-worker. The fact the powers that be are only concerned about their business ARE the real culprits..

This post becomes immediately suspect when it claims that a viral infection spreads BACTERIA with the coughing and sneezing. To quote from above: “The virus can transfer the disease when you sneeze or cough. In the initial stage, there is a swelling in the air passage. At this time, there is no formation of virus. When the bacteria released by the patients through sneeze and cough spreads through the air, the disease gets spread to others around.”

Bronchitis, basically, is the swelling of the bronchia, thus, it is not contagious. However, as the bacteria starts to form, the disease then is contageous the moment the bacteria was emitted into the air.

I can say without a doubt that, in my case, the bronchitis has NEVER gone away without antibiotics. And believe me, I have tried to tough it out. The longest I’ve gone was four weeks (during which time I had also passed out on one ocassion from a coughing fit - bruised my body/face and big lump on my head in the process). If a doctor (walk-in clinic) tries to tell me that antibiotics won’t help - I argue.

I have had bronchitis four to five times, and each time have been on antibiotics. This may have been done due to misinformation at the time, but I believe I would have gotten a lot worse without them. My mother was sick for a week or two and finally saw the doctor and was told she had pneumonia with bronchitis. It isn’t wise to wait it out that long. I am sick now. I had a cold for two weeks. I was feeling pretty much normal except for a nagging cough. Then I spiked a 101 F fever. My nasal passages became inflamed and it became unbearable to sleep because I’d wake up in the middle of the night coughing. I have been taking Mucus pills to unplug my nose and help my cough, have been using a vaporizor to help me breathe and not worsen my asthma. I can’t take Sudafed (which helps me the most) due to a thyroid condition. I still have my tonsils. So, all in all, my cold has now turned into an infectious disease. I am not a chronic doctor going person and only go if I feel my absolute worst. I think seeing your doctor and accepting antibiotics, if recommended, is the wisest thing you can do. Don’t deny antibiotics if you’re being told to take them. There’s an obvious reason for it. If you want to beat bronchitis, exercising and staying away from air pollutants/allergens will help most. There’s always two sides to every story.

Thanks for the interesting information.

It’s true what Sarah says–I’ve had bronchitis for 12 days and I’m starting to feel better with NO antibiotics. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections and if you take them when you don’t need them, you develop resistance. Then next time they won’t work as well. Only people who are otherwise compromised (lung disease, heavy smokers, elderly, babies) and might have a secondary infection which could lead to pneumonia should consider antibiotics. Otherwise, wait it out–your body will heal itself in 1-2 weeks. Use cough syrup and/or decongestant at night to help with sleeping. Take a little Tylenol for body aches. Don’t cough into your hands. Don’t shake hands with people. Drink lots of water. Get more rest. Take a nap. Take some vitamin C and echinacea. Wash your hands a lot or use antibacterial gel. Change hand towels. Don’t share drinks. Stay home from work so you don’t contaminate your co-workers. It is very contagious–the whole family has it now-mother, husband, brother, even my 16 month old–who recovered the fastest.

Just wait for a period of 2 weeks. Opt to see a doctor immediately. Then take medications and see for 2 weeks. Even if that does not go, proactively talk with your doctor and do the needful

Bronchitis is contagious definitely. So its better to be isolated till the infection subsides. Even the utensils used by the patient can be transmitters of the infection. Better be safe than being sorry after the contraction

Antibiotics will not help you with this if it is viral… If it turns bacterial, then they will help, but until then, they are useless

I was just diagnosed with bronchitis, however I am concerned after reading the symptoms. I did not have any cold or allergies. My symptoms started with a fever that spiked up to 103. Coughing didn’t develop until 2 days later. She said it’s not pneumonia or the flu, and I may have bronchitis now, but I don’t think that’s what started it (I’m still suffering from spiking fevers after 4 days).

Bronchitis is just the inflammation of the bronchial tubes in the lungs. It can be acute or chronic. Just have a look at this url- http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/acute-bronchitis-treatment-overview for the treatment options available for acute bronchitis. In case of chronic bronchitis, it is completely not curable but manageable. Just quit smoking. That’s the best measure that you can opt for,

It is better that you discuss the symptoms with your medical practitioner. Especially if it lasts for more than 3 weeks it is vital that you proactively discuss that with him. 4-13 years is definitely young and getting treated on time is important

Taking cough medicines while you have bronchitis only masks the symptoms and does not help breakup the phlegm necessary to expel out of your bronchials. Because you are asthmatic, it is important to keep your airways clear. You can also become immune to cough meds. When asthmatics have bronchitis whether its acute or viral you are at higher risk for pnemonia. Asthmatics also react differently to cough meds than non asthmatics. Usually in cases of severe bronchitis guaifissen (sp) is recommended as it helps break up the phlegm for easier coughing and expelling. Also, keep in mind because you are asthmatic, using a chest cold rub like vicks vapor rub can cause you to develop pnemonia. Its important to see your doc because you are at risk for complications. No Im not a doctor, my mother had severe asthma and so does my daughter…

I was just curious as to how you came to the conclusions listed in your article? What was your initial intention? To scare the living crap out of people, make people lose jobs, or just to simply misinform the masses?
First off, I have chronic bronchitis. It is NOT contagious. It is caused by an infection or an irritation that enters the lung cavity, like smoking or working in a dusty environment. The virus is what is contagious but once you begin exibiting acute bronchitis, you have already spread the contagion from the cold or flu bug you just got over. Also, the recovery period is 2-4 weeks, not 1-2.
When putting health information out for people to use as a guide for their life, I would suggest citing your references unless you are a doctor, and then you should provide your qualifications.
PS. I would prefer not to be emailed or added to any junk lists please and thank you!

It is correct that some forms of bronchitis are bacterial, some are viral. Antibiotics will only work with bacterial, and not always in those cases. Changing your lifestyle and eating habits to improve immune system function can do a lot to help, and there are herbal remedies that are quite effective during outbreaks.

Coughing is definitely a sign of nicotine withdrawal, however nicotine withdrawal symptoms typically only last a few days and are minor. Nicotine doesn’t have any long lasting withdrawal symptoms. So please don’t listen to this ass-tard of a person chrystal. If you stopped smoking over 2 weeks ago, then you need to see a doctor. It quite well could be bronchitis.

[Reply]
Theresa Reply:

Generally there is not a lot of vomiting due to Bronchitis. When there is vomiting it is usually caused by the gag reflex being aggravated from extreme coughing and that’s when vomiting occurs. Thus being the reason why Inhalers are prescribed, they help control the cough and open the air ways.
I know for myself and my children having a humidifier pumping moisture into the air and tea help relieve some of the coughing.

I have had bronchitis for eleven days now. I went to the doctor on day two and she diagnosed bronchitis and prescribed cough medicine and an antibiotic. I continued to run a low grade fever 99-100.3 so missed work all week and returned on day six to the doctor. She said possible pneumonia, changed meds to another antibiotic, prednisone and albuterol inhaler. Still ran low grade fever and returned to doctor on day nine, changed prednisone dosage to higher, changed albuterol to a nebulizer, ordered chest xray. Still running low grade fever in evening. Chest xray showed no pneumonia just bronchitis. Have missed a week and a half of work (school teacher), was planning to go back half days for the remainder of this week and then resume full days next week but what if my fever continues this evening rise. Is it okay to go to work or not?

I’ve been told by a few Doctors that I am not contagious. I was diagnosed with bronchitis 3 weeks ago, I have two young children who have no symptoms of it. Even as a young child I had bronchitis at least 2 times a year. This time, the first day I was diagnosed with it, I was given a shot of steroids to help me get over it ‘quicker,’ an inhaler and a a Z-Pack. A week later I was wheezing even worse and went to an After Hours Clinic because I couldn’t get in to see my Doctor and they gave me a steroid dose pack and an antibiotic. Here I am in week 3 and my breathing is getting even worse. I’m not wheezing as much but the shortness of breath is worse and I feel tight in my chest. But still, my children are not showing any symptoms, thank goodness!!

Why is it that people listen to their relatives? Bronchitis according to DOCTORS and Medical Professionals is NOT CONTAGIOUS. It is an issue an inflamation of your tubes, which get covered by muccus. However, because of your weak state you may become infected by something that CAN be passed on to others when you sneeze or cough, BRONCHITIS IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. Those of you who think or believe it is are WRONG.

I just had Bronchitis for about 9 weeks and I’m not a smoker and it was my first time having it. It is obviously contagious considering I gave it to my room mate along with a couple friends, although theirs weren’t as severe as mine. Antibiotics did NOT work for me obviously, my doctor gave them to me in hopes of preventing anything else from entering my weakened body.

Was just at the Dr. today, have Asthmatic Bronchitis, no fever, clear phlegm. Was told by this Dr. (not my regular) that asthmatic bronchitis is caused in people with asthma by irritants, not contagious. This is what I have been told by my family doctor and specialist as well. While I definitely recommend getting the Dr.’s opinion and not self diagnosing, I was told that my symptoms, horrible cough (to the point of vomiting), clear congestion, no fever, and no other symptoms (not achy, felt fine other than the sore lungs, no sore throat etc) other than severe seasonal allergies and asthma are the indicators. I was also swabbed for strep b/c my nephew has it. I specifically asked the Dr. if it was safe to work (I teach 1st grade) and be around my bff’s daughter who is under a month and was told it was. I get this several times a year and once I get steroids and start nebulizer treatments it is gone in a day or two, don’t agree that I should miss a week of work each time, and neither does my doctor.

I have cronic asthmatic bronchitis. Caused by asthma, smoking, and weak respiratory tract. I can get this from allergins, and smoking. I have yetto have a doctor tell me I am contageous or that a virus or bacteria are involved. Therefore asthmatic bronchitis is only contageous if a virus or bacteria are involved. Also, some doctors put you on antibiotics as a preventative measure. However, antibiotics do not work for viral infections. Some may disagree with this post but anytime you are sick, and even when you are not, ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS and do not go around people with a weakened immune system!
