Rasping sounds when inhaling and hoarse-sounding coughs are the most common signs of ‘croup’ or barking cough. This condition often occurs in young children between 6 months to 3 years in age. Barking cough is usually caused by mucous buildup in the trachea and bronchial tubes leading to inflammation, swelling and irritation. Barking cough can be easily cured with medicines but parents are advised to seek medical attention if the barking cough is accompanied by persistent fever.
