Mononucleosis is usually caused by Epstein-Barr virus (a herpes virus). Sometimes it is caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV). Mononucleosis affects the upper respiratory tract, the lymphatic tissues and lymphatic glands in the neck, groin, armpits, etc.
