Mononucleosis is an infectious viral disease. Mononucleosis is known by many names such as: glandular fever, mono, Pfeiffer’s disease and kissing disease. It affects certain blood cells, upper respiratory tract, the lymphatic tissues and lymphatic glands in the neck, groin, armpits, etc. Mononucleosis is a member of the herpes virus family.

Mono is a viral infection. There is presence of blood in the urine of mono infected person. Mono causes bloody urine.

No outward appearing symptoms appear in mono. It is a self limiting disease. It disappears on its own within a few months.

Mononucleosis virus affects the lymph glands, spleen and the liver. It is not found that it can affect the eyes. It is a contagious disease which also produces some complications. Some of the complications may be long term.

Fatigue, Weakness, Sore throat, Fever, Swollen lymph nodes, Swollen tonsils is the symptoms of mono. Few other symptoms too may be present at times – Skin rash, Loss of appetite, Enlargement of the spleen and inflammation of the liver.

The virus called Epstein Barr causes mononucleosis. This virus belongs to the herpes family of virus. It spreads via sexual contact. The virus stays on the salvia of human body. It spreads mostly in adults and young generation.

Liver inflammation, encephalitis, guillain-Barre, syndrome and bell’s palsy are the common injuries of mononucleosis. There may have an enlarged spleen which may rupture and may require surgery. 50% of the patients may get liver inflammation.

The virus Epstein Barr is the cause of mononucleosis. When the virus transfers from one person to another he gets infected with it. The virus is most commonly transferred by kissing or having sexual contact. Sharing food or drinking in utensils of infected person too, can transfer the virus.

The viral disease mononucleosis is highly contagious. When a man gets the infection he can be contagious for 1-2 weeks. It may last for more days like 1 or 2 months. It spreads through sexual contact.

There are few tests that your doctor shall prescribe to detect the presence of mono. Mono spot test, mononuclear heterophile test and heterophile antibody test are some of the important tests to detect mono. Doctor may even prescribe blood test.
